ABINGDON, Va. — For the past 10 years, Heather Buchanan has taken her various farm animals to the Washington County Fair.

This year, she arrived with chickens, Pygmy goats, donkeys and “Little Roger,” her bourbon red turkey.

Buchanan was putting the finishes touches on her corner of the Old McDonald’s Petting Zoo for the kickoff Monday of the 68th annual fair. This year’s theme is “All Roads Lead to the Washington County Fair.” The fair runs through Saturday.

Dave McLeish, of Dreamland Alpacas in Meadowview, Virginia, brought some alpacas and baby doll sheep to the petting zoo this year, his seventh.

McLeish loves the “pleasure of seeing the kids’ faces,” as they meet the alpacas.

Once in a while, McLeish takes the alpacas out of the cage or holds them so the children can pet them.
