PALMYRA, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Sacred Acres Farm in Palmyra opened for the public for people to meet and feed its 13 alpacas and celebrate National Alpaca Farm Days.

This farm is more than a home for alpacas. MaryJane Cathers said it is a spiritual place for her.

When Cathers first moved to the farm, she was taking care of her husband who was suffering from advanced dementia. Her husband passed away three years ago.

"I knew that his time on this earth was going to be limited," she said. "I'm kind of carrying on our combined dreams with this farm."

She began going to workshops to learn everything she needed to know to raise alpacas. Then last year, she welcomed her first four alpacas to the farm. Now, she has more than a dozen of them to feed, train, and clean up. She realized she needed some help.
