A Ruapehu couple has opened up their gates to celebrate National Alpaca day on Sunday.

The open day attracted locals and visitors to Nevalea Alpacas to take part in the annual event.

Leonie and Neville Walker's love for alpacas started in 2007.

They started out with two females with baby cria.  Now the farm has grown to over 750 alpacas.

Leonie said they had a good flow of people through the gates on the weekend.

"By opening our farm it's a good opportunity for our community to enjoy the alpacas.

The Walker's have participated in every open day for nine years.

This year a mixture of locals and new visitors came out to enjoy the unique experience.
