Albuquerque, N.M. Award-winning barn-to-closet creator of hand-made and hand-sewn, high-quality alpaca fiber fabric and garments, Whispirit is pleased to announce that six of its unique, hand needle-felted and crafted jackets are headed to New York’s Fashion Week this year.

On September 8, 2018 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, Whispirit’s fashions will be part of the hiTechMODA “Runway The Real Way: Fashion Diversity on the Inclusive Catwalk” show, featuring emerging and independent fashion designers committed to transforming the way the garment industry operates today.

“This is a great opportunity for Whispirit, and we’re thrilled to be heading back to New York for Fashion Week,” says Sandy Liggett, co-owner and designer at Whispirit. “We and 11 other fabric producers were invited to participate in Local Loft at Texworld last month to showcase our USA-made fabrics. They had us on a raised stage in the middle of the show! We even got a mention on television and in Women’s Wear Daily. We got noticed.” Texworld is one of the largest textile trade shows, bringing together industry professionals from across the globe. Local Loft was created in response to the many attendees who desperately seek domestic and locally-sourced production facilities and textile goods.
One of the people who noticed them was one of the original plus-sized supermodels, Catherine Schuller, now a fashion industry icon. Schuller was impressed with Whispirit’s fabrics and designs, and even more impressed when she found out about Whispirit’s eco-friendly, sustainable business model. She passed the word to hiTechMODA, which resulted in Whispirit’s invitation to include six jackets in the runway show.
Liggett will also be part of an industry panel on September 7 at design school LIM, talking about eco-sustainable design. All Whispirit’s hand-made, award-winning designs are as close as possible to 100% grown, manufactured and assembled in the United States.
Whispirit’s designs are available at Artemisia Artwear in Taos, Handwoven Originals in Santa Fe, Diva in Sedona and Diva Womens Wear in Scottsdale. More information about Whispirit, its fabrics and designs can be found at www.whispirit.net.
About Whispirit
Whispirit creates unique, high-quality garments and accessories showcasing the pasture-to-closet nature of U.S. born and raised alpaca. Sandra Liggett’s simple, award-winning designs permit the beauty of the non-woven (non-knitted) alpaca fabric to shine as wearable, durable and useful art, requiring the same care as any natural wool garment. Whispirit won the Best Artist ~ Art To Wear Fashion award at the Western Design Conference in 2016 for its Fire Nymph alpaca jacket, the unanimous choice of the six-member jury.
Another goal of the company is to take a step in bringing textile manufacturing and truly, totally, American-made craftsmanship back to life in this country, creating or sustaining jobs in New Mexico. The Whispirit alpacas are born, raised and shorn in New Mexico. The batting mills are in Colorado and Washington. This unique felted fabric is loomed at Whispirit’s New Mexico ranch. Our seamstresses are local, too.
